The Bleeding Tooth
Filed Under Life Happenings | Leave a Comment
I awoke from my 7pm “20 minute” nap at about 12:00am. I felt a bit groggy as my body complained about the sudden change in my sleep cycle. Of course, practically preprogrammed, my first destination is the bathroom. As I brushed my teeth, I noticed that the toothbrush turned a pinkish color.
This had actually never surprised me. The first time it happened, I recalled a conversation that my father had with a doctor when I was young. They were discussing his missing wisdom tooth. Apparantly, he has only 3 out of 4 wisdom teeth grown, and being a curious boy, I distinctly recall the doctor mentioning that the pressure from the missing tooth is causing bleeding in his mouth.
Okay, so far, this has been kind of gross, but bear with me
I have the exact same wisdom teeth configuration. For some reason, my upper left wisdom tooth has not been fully grown. Also, my father has extremely healthy teeth. He doesn’t even need to brush it every day. My mother on the other hand, has a mouth full of fake teeth, and brushes it with vigilance twice a day. Fortunately, I have adopted my father’s traits.
I have never had a cavity; I brush my teeth as often as I remember to; I don’t even use toothpaste most of the time (I tend to like using that and mouthwash when I feel an inflamation in my mouth); I also never have bad breath (that I’m aware of). Any doctor would tell you that’s a recipe for a cavity, and yet here I am, with no cavity. I’ve also never had braces.
Yet, I can’t help but wonder if the bleeding has something to do with it (maybe in addition to the genetic traits). It must change the pH of my mouth, and there’s probably all kinds of antibodies in my blood that fights bacteria. That’s kind of a weird though - instead of using mouthwash, rinse your mouth with blood? Probably doesn’t taste so good
For anyone curious, nope, it doesn’t taste any different. Nope, you can’t see it. It’s almost like a thin layer covering all my teeth or something. A ridiculous theory? Maybe. Who knows!
